This case study details the design and development of LaborLink, a mobile application designed to address the challenges faced by daily wage laborers in finding work and contractors in finding reliable, skilled labor.  I, as the lead UX/UI designer, played a crucial role in shaping the app's user experience, focusing on accessibility and efficiency.

LaborLink is a two-sided labor marketplace designed to streamline the hiring process between contractors and daily wage laborers. The app ensures laborers can easily browse and accept job offers, while contractors can post jobs and hire skilled laborers efficiently.

Daily wage laborers often struggle with inconsistent work and unreliable hiring processes, relying heavily on word-of-mouth and informal networks. Contractors, on the other hand, face difficulties in finding skilled and available workers efficiently.  This results in lost productivity for both parties. My research involved interviews with laborers and contractors, revealing significant communication barriers and a lack of transparency in the hiring process.

The primary objective was to create a user-friendly app that facilitates efficient job matching between laborers and contractors. Key performance indicators (KPIs) included user sign-ups, daily active users (DA&nbsp; &nbsp;U), job match rate, average time to hire, user ratings, successful payment transactions, and voice navigation/language preference usage.

User research involved in-depth interviews with laborers and contractors across various demographics.  Key insights included a need for simplified navigation (many users had low digital literacy), a strong preference for voice-based interactions, and a need for secure payment options.  Competitive analysis revealed gaps in existing platforms, mainly in accessibility and user experience.

The ideation phase involved brainstorming sessions, sketching, and wireframing.  We explored various design concepts, emphasizing ease of use, intuitive navigation, and accessible features. Feedback from initial user testing sessions guided iterative improvements throughout this stage.

Wireframing focused on creating a clean and intuitive user flow.  We prioritized clear job postings, simple application processes, and secure messaging systems.  Prototyping involved creating interactive prototypes using Figma, enabling us to test various aspects of the design with users. The visual design was kept minimalistic, using clear icons and color-coded elements to enhance usability.

The biggest challenge was addressing the needs of users with low digital literacy.  We overcame this by incorporating voice-activated navigation, creating a predominantly icon-based UI, and keeping text concise and clear. We also conducted usability testing with diverse user groups, which helped refine the design.

LaborLink achieved significant success in bridging the gap between contractors and daily wage laborers.  Post-launch metrics demonstrated a 60% reduction in average time to hire for contractors, and laborers reported finding suitable work much faster than before. User engagement was high, indicating that the app successfully addressed the needs of both user groups.  User feedback highlighted the positive impact of the app's accessibility features.

This project reinforced the importance of inclusive design and user-centricity.  I learned the value of incorporating user feedback at every stage of the design process.  If I were to work on a similar project again, I would invest even more time in ethnographic research to gain deeper insights into user needs.

LaborLink successfully addressed the challenges of job visibility and hiring inefficiencies in the daily wage labor market. The app's focus on accessibility and user experience has resulted in a positive impact on both laborers and contractors. Future development will focus on enhancing features, expanding the user base, and further improving the platform's effectiveness.

I'm thrilled to share my experience designing Nari Seva, a telemedicine solution aimed at improving healthcare access for rural women in India.  This project challenged me to create an inclusive and user-friendly platform, addressing the unique needs of a population often overlooked by traditional telemedicine apps. I utilized Figma and user research software.

This project aimed to tackle the significant barrier to healthcare access faced by rural women with limited digital literacy and technology.  Many existing telemedicine apps are complex and require strong digital skills, leaving this vulnerable population behind. Nari Seva was conceived as a solution that would empower these women to take control of their health.



Telemedical refers to providing healthcare services remotely through technology, enabling consultations, diagnoses, and treatment without in-person visits, especially benefiting patients in remote areas. 

The primary goal of telemedical services is to make healthcare more accessible, particularly for patients in remote or underserved areas.



The core problem was the inaccessibility of existing telemedicine platforms for rural women.  Through secondary research and initial surveys, I identified several key issues: low digital literacy, limited access to smartphones and internet, preference for local languages, and cultural considerations regarding healthcare seeking behavior.  Solving this problem is crucial because it directly impacts the health and wellbeing of a substantial segment of the population, preventing them from receiving timely and adequate medical attention.

My primary objective was to design a user-friendly, accessible telemedicine solution specifically tailored for rural women. The success criteria included a high user adoption rate, a significant appointment completion rate, high user satisfaction scores, and demonstrably increased numbers of first-time users from rural/semi-rural areas.  A secondary goal was to track improvements in health awareness amongst the user base.

The design process began with extensive user research. I conducted in-person interviews with women in rural areas, incorporating observations, detailed note-taking and feedback collection.  This qualitative research supplemented by secondary research and existing literature on this topic.  Based on this data, I created detailed user personas to represent the diverse needs of our target audience.  Competitive analysis provided benchmarks for existing telemedicine apps and highlighted what features were both successful and lacking.

Following the research phase, ideation involved brainstorming sessions and sketching potential solutions.  I initially explored different approaches, before focusing on a dual solution: a simplified mobile app and easily accessible kiosks.  This iterative process involved multiple design reviews and feedback sessions, incorporating suggestions from the team and potential users.

The design process started with wireframing, focusing on intuitive navigation and clear information architecture.  This was followed by high-fidelity prototyping, which allowed for user testing and feedback incorporation.  The visual design prioritized simplicity, using large icons, high contrast colors, and regional language support.  The user testing involved focus groups and usability testing with the target users to refine the design and ensure usability.

Designing for low digital literacy presented a major challenge.  To address this, the design incorporates voice assistance, large icons, simple visual cues, and regional languages.  Another challenge was understanding the nuances of rural needs without direct access to those populations.  This was overcome through research on similar successful projects and partnerships with local health workers. The third challenge was striking a balance between tech feasibility and user needs.  This was resolved by opting for a dual-platform approach (app and kiosk).

The final outcome was a two-pronged solution: the Nari Seva app and a network of kiosks in rural areas.  The app is a simplified telemedicine platform with voice assistance, visual guidance and multilingual support. The kiosks provide physical access points for women who lack smartphone access. Post-launch data shows encouraging results: a steadily increasing user adoption rate, high user satisfaction scores and significant improvement in appointment completion rates.  These positive initial results show we are on the right track.

This project reinforced the importance of user-centered design and inclusive practices.   I learned the value of integrating multiple research methods for a holistic understanding of user needs.  The hybrid approach (app and kiosk) proved essential in reaching a wider audience.   Looking back, I would allocate more time to initial user research to uncover even more nuanced insights and further refine the design from the very beginning.

Nari Seva demonstrates that thoughtful design can effectively address the healthcare disparities faced by marginalized communities.  The project’s success is a testament to the power of user-centered design, and I am eager to continue to improve accessibility in telemedicine to empower more women to take charge of their health.  Future plans include expanding the kiosk network and incorporating additional health services into the app.
